Gray 109 Oil Capacity

I have a 1958 Gray 109 in a 1960 23 foot Lyman Sleeper The manual states the oil capacity as approximately 9 quarts. However, when I extracted the oil out, including pumping any oil out of the transmission housing, it only took about 5 3/4 quarts to fill the crankcase to the full level of the dipstick.

Should I be concerned that there is not enough oil in the engine, or is everything fine since the reading on the dipstick is fine?

Here I am 10 years later asking myself the exact same question as I'm in exactly the same scenario. I wonder if an answer was ever determined?
