Water pump has very little to do with the actual shifting.-------------Broken driveshaft is a possibility.----Prop drive pin missing or broken ?--------If someone worked on the water pump then possibly the shift was not hooked up correctly.----------The history on the motor is a huge help in determining what might be wrong.-------------How long have you owned it ?-----Did this happen all of a sudden ?------Oil in the lower unit checked and no water in there ?

we have owned the boat several years! The boat was running fine..getting it water ready...oil was checked/changed in lower unit....was running fine...a loud pop/bang....and the motor will not spray water to cool, or shift gears!...we changed the water pump, but will still not spray water/cool/ or change gears

Pull the lower unit off !!!!------------Either the shift rod is disconnected or the driveshaft broke.----------You did check the drive pin in the propeller I hope.

We did pull the lower unit off! the shift rod was not disconnected...and yes we did check the drive pin in the propeller! We thank you for all the responses, and any other suggestions are greatly welcome!

Is there a spine at the top of the driveshaft.-------------------Sure sounds like a broken driveshaft.--------------------Remove the plate on the side of the exhaust housing.----Operate the shift lever.---------Shift rod should move up and down.
