1965 18hp Johnson water pump

Water pump only works when it wants to. Thermostst is removed. Pump works about every other time I start engine. Any advice?

Well the thermostat should be installed.-----------Then , is it a new pump impeller and was the aluminum housing inspected for wear amnd grooves.---If it is a new impeller is it a factory replacement ??----Impellers are rubber and if it was in bad shape did you find all the pieces of a broken impeller???
