40 HP Johnson coil

I have a 1975 40 HP Johnson I just aquired and am having problems. The spark plug wires both fell out of the coils and when I was putting them back I noticed the lower coil had partially melted and slid down the U shaped bracket that holds it in place. Not sure if it works or not as I have not gotten it running since. The coils seem to be replacements as they are new looking and blue in color. All advice is appreciated. Thanks
 
I believe this motor has 2 external ignition coils and one driver coil under the flywheel.--------------Different from the universal magneto used in many motors up to the early 70's
 
You are correct. I did get it started last night and it idled nicely. It also had good power but the longer it ran it ran slightly rougher. I'm guessing from my automotive experience it is an electrical issue. If the coil got hot enough to partially melt it probably isn't producing proper spark as it gets warm. I appreciate the reply.
