How do you check whether a stern drive is operable without an engine?

Hello,

I am looking to buy a boat that has a blown motor. Is there a way to check whether the stern drive is operable with a blown motor? Can I turn over the crank somehow (the engine was not winterized) and check to see if the propeller turns?

Sorry Bondo, it's mercruiser sterndrive that was fitted up with a mercruiser 305 engine. I have been told the engine is no longer in the boat. I have not seen the boat because it is 70 miles a way. The boat is a 1995 or '96 Marada.

Ayuh,... 'bout all you can do is check it's oil for purity, 'n roll it over by hand, shiftin' gears, to see if it shifts...

That vintage, oughta be an Alpha Gen.II...
