My early 1980's 10 hp Honda with reverse needs the impeller changed. I have removed the bolts holding the lower unit to the intermediate unit and the lower unit has dropped about 1.5". The manual I have says that the shift rod and drive shaft should be 2 piece and the splined joints should seperate - but it does not - tried tapping on the lower unit in case they were stuck - but no luck. Any advice would be appreciated - thanks in advance.
 
You need to remove the pin at the top of the shift rod.------------You also need to remove the housing above the lower unit .------Remove mount bolts and then the 4 bolts for the housing.---------The threaded adapter can then be removed from the shift rod.--------------Sounds complicated but actually very easy to do.
