1987 Yamaha 175 Ignition problem

Rebuilt the engine. Got the engine running. Put it in the water and discoverd that it begins "missing" at about 2000 RPM. Got the timing light out. Timed it @ 7 degrees-before-top-dead-center for idle. When I moved the pulser coil to advance the spark and the RPM increased it started missing at around 2000 RPM again. Looking at the timing light I see that the spark was cutting out. As soon as I moved the advance back and the RPM dropped, the spark returned. I then tried the timing light on each of the other 5 cylinders. Same thing...spark becomes erratic above 2000 RPM, but returns at low RPM. Something common to all 6 cylinders. Suspect the pulser coil (as I have already replaced the charge/lighting coil, rectifier and the 6 ignition coils). Before I buy a new pulser coil, can anyone tell me what diagnostics I can do on it to determine whether it is good or bad?
