disconnecting shift cable prior to lower unit removal

HELP I have a 96 Yamaha 9.9 electric start. I am trying to replace the water pump because it is not peeing. For the life of me I can not get the locking nut that d/c the shift cable to separate. I have continued to unwind the threads on the connector union to the point that I am afraid of damaging the shifting cable and causing a serious repair job. I have exposed the thread about an inch or maybe a little more and still no separation. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks John

Someone worked on that and the tall nut apparently was screwed too far on to the lower shaft. If it isn't binding, keep screwing it up on to the upper shaft until it separates. If it is binding on the threads then you have another issue to deal with.
