Totally new to boats!...need help in identifying year please.

Hi guys, Im totally new to boat engines and bought one yesterday, the boat is in great structural shape but the engine, according to the owner "doesn't take a spark".....hopefully i will use this wealth of knowledge on this forum to fix it up!

Right now i need to know the year this was made. I know its a Mercury Mariner 85.

I THINK, S/N: P/N332-5772A1

Thanks for the reply boat_tech, your right. I did some more searching and came up with a stamped number "4842989"

I even looked here <http://www.iboats.com/basics/mercury.html> but couldn't find anything.

Thanks for clearing that up....so what do you think? this is some kind of "franken-engine"? since the body has a big 85 on it.
