Yamaha 6hp missing metal wedge key HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, this is my first post on the forum and am glad to join the community

A few days ago I proceeded to place my 6HP Yamaha outboard on the back of the hull after flushing it, when I did so a metal wedge key, that was attached to the motor via fishing line, snapped off. This part is required to start the motor and without it the outboard is rendered useless. The motor is pre 2000, and the part itself does not look unique to the motor.

My question is: What is this part called? and where and how (if so) can I get a new one?

It sounds like you are referring to the lock plate the goes under the stop switch, mounted on the front of the engine. Without this lock switch installed the engine will not start. If this is what you are referring to it sounds like it has already been replaced at some time as all the one I have seen are plastic. You should be able to fabricate another one out of either plastic or aluminium. If you need to use the engine straight away, try disconnecting the switch under the cowl.
