looking for a ignition coil for a mercury 3.6 1985 no spark

it looks like inside the flywheel has gone rusty maybe why their is no spark but also the spade connector on the coil has rusted and snapped off. so looks like i need a replacement
 
is their any way of testing the ignition coil, say off a battery just to see if i get spark i dont want to buy a coil if the parts under the flywheel have gone?
