2002 F40 - Piece of magnet and shavings found under cowling

I have 2002 F40 that we use daily. Today the pee stream stopped, motor got hot, when back at the dock I found magnet shavings all over the block and a large 1 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch chunk of magnet inside the cowling. Engine still runs and cranks fine (at least for now).

Any ideas on what went wrong would be appreciated.
