2000 2 hp yamaha 2 stroke water pump replacement

2000 2hp model--2MSHY the pump housing will not fit over the D-shaft. there seems to be a two piece shaft and the seals in the upper pump housing won't allow it to fit over. and even if would slide over the shaft ,there is a larger square coupling at the d-shaft end that fits over the end of the crank. do you have to take apart the lower unit and pull out the d-shaft??? I hope not!! any help would be apreciated thanks.
 
problem solved.you do have to take the LU apart .remove the two screws retianing the prop shaft bearing housing. then remove the housing. look inside the gearcase there is a E-clip on the end of the drive shaft. remove the E-clip and the pinion gear. the drive shaft will pull up and out of the gearcase!! then you can service the water pump.sounds more complicated than it is.
