Removing transom bolts- Honda BF50 4-Stroke

I'd like to temporarily remove the top two transom bolts on my 2007 BF50 (one at a time of course - there are 4 bolts holding my outboard to the transom, 2 up top 2 down below). The reason is that I would like to put some bigger flat washers under the bolts than the stock ones to distribute the load on my transom better.

What is the best process for doing this? I imagine that I need to trim all the way up, and then prop the outboard with wood so that the load is taken off the transom bolts.

Once the load is lightened, do I just (gently) pound the bolt out with a mallet?
