Looking to get a new one.
It's the 300 block dumbed down to a 250.
It's been out a few years.

And they are pricey so trying to determine if they are worth it.

What are your experiences with the following:

Reliability- how many hours can I expect to get out of it?
Service costs- heard some numbers of 750-1000 bucks per year for basic service.
Frequency of valve adjustments
Fuel usage
Anything else?

Thanks a lot,
Leon

Go to Yamaha website and compare performance reports. I think you will be impressed. What are you replacing? I don't have any reservations regarding that product from my experience.

I've seen the reports...but those can always be biased by each manufacturer. Swapping out a 225 Optimax. I really wanted to know more details about expected life and service costs

Actually the expected life probably may be hard to know at this early stage in the life history. Sounds like someone has you running scared. The 4.2 shouldn't be any more costly to maintain than any other motor. The valve adjustments in my opinion are a non issue. If it came out of the factory in spec and you use Yamaha 5w30 synthetic and change every 100 hr there is little reason for the clearance to deviate. So far I have no problem with this motor.

Don't operate one personally but have sold and serviced many and have some in enforcement and charter service as well. Seems to also be rewriting the book on fuel ecomomy too.
