Questions about a "Rectifier"

My motor is a Yamaha 25HP four-stroke (F25ESHC). Electric start, tiller handle.

A couple months ago when I was out on the lake, I kept smelling something burning or smoldering. I looked everywhere but could not find it. I had my cowling off today looking over my motor just checking everything out for spring. Noticed a melted hole in the back of the rectifier. It stunk like what I was smelling a few months ago.

I didnt even know this was called a rectifer till I looked it up on a parts website. Here is what I am talking about. http://screencast.com/t/zdNnU3KdmT6D.

There is a melted hole in the back side (side toward engine).

Question 1. What does this thing do. It has to do something, right, or it wouldnt be on there.
Engine starts and runs fine... no problems there.

Question 2. Is it common for these things to just pop? The site that I looked it up on wants $175 for it. Seems expensive.

Question 3. If I replace it, could there be something else that is bad, that caused this thing to go?

What you refer to is actually a rectiffier/regulator. The rectifier part converts the alternating current produced by the alternator on your engine to direct current through the use of diodes. The regulator then regulates the voltage going to your battery to a predetermined level, about 14-15volts DC. Use voltmeter on your battery to see if it's still getting a carge from your engine while running. The voltmeter should show an increase to about 13-14v with the engine running. Thanks for the link. Here is whats left of mine. http://screencast.com/t/WDNUrmFp8Db I'll try to check it and see if it still works, but I doubt it.
The rectifier that they are talking about in the other article is a universal 090-5. You think that one will work on my motor? $45 is much better than $175. Quess I could try it and see.

Like I said, I am pretty sure that this rectifier went out a few months ago. I have probably put 3 or 4 hrs on the motor since then. Question is, could it have damaged something else from running the engine without a working rectifier?
