Sealant to use on drain bung fitting

Hi,
I have to replace the drain bung on my boat.
May I ask, what is the correct sealant to use ?
Do I apply sealant to the fitting and tighten fully home, or do I tighten partially and then let it harden ?
Thanks in advance .

I would use a marine caulking compound meant for underwater fittings(thru-hulls).SIKKAFLEX, BOATLIFE, OR 3M(not 5200 as it is too permanent) Apply the sealant on the male threads and tighten as you would normally. This is what we use on threaded fittings that thread onto thru-hull fittings.

I would definitely use 3M 5200 on this fitting. Not only will it seal permanently it will not allow the fitting to turn after it hardens. Make sure your fitting has to be attached with screws also not just a backing nut.

You're talking about a bronze Garboard Drain fitting, correct?

I agree that 5200 will work well and will help prevent it from turning.
Be sure to use bronze screws to keep the metals similar.
One may end up being a machine screw w/ nut and with a bonding wire connected to it on the inside.

As with any metallic components attached to the stern, keep a 1" distance from anti-fouling paint contact.
Similar to what this guy DIDN'T do first time around, but is correcting now.
