I have a 1989 byliner trophty with a 305, had it running but wanted to get the carburetor rebuilted. and now it will not start. i did a test with the light to make sure i was getting fire and when i touch the - on the coil the light on the tester came on, it also came on when i touch the + side of the coil. should both side of the coil make the test light come on, or do i have a wire cross somewhere. hope someone can help me with this

yep, what you saw was normal IF the points are open.
If you put your test light back on the (-) side again, and bar the engine over, you should see the light go off, then on, then off, as the points open and close with engine rotation.
Every time the points close, your light will go off.
