Hi, Drained my lower unit oil today it came out black. Like I changed my car oil. Is the oil burnt? Any ideas ? thanks Mike
 
Not likely as the lower unit is usually cooled by water.-----------------Most gear oil smells " bad " when it is new.----------------Engine / combustion is far away from the lower unit.---------------No need to worry.
 
Exhaust runs through lower unit ... also if bearings were going south it could be heating up and causing the oil to look different than that from your other engine.

You may want to check both lower units next year half way through the season ... if you find the same thing it may be time for some work on that lower unit.

I'm just guessing, but that's what I would do.
