ysm12-r motor blowing smoke - need help

I am assisting a friend in repairing his engine that overheated. The engine was shutdown as soon as the overheat warning went on. It turned out to be the impeller, which we replaced. Upon starting the engine after the repair, blue/grey smoke came out of what we have determined to be the cooling water drain cock. When we crank the engine with no throttle, little to no smoke emerges. The engine will turn over, but we don't know if this will cause any damage.

Is this smoke normal for a cold start (unburned fuel)? Should we just start it with plenty of ventilation and see if it stops? What would cause this smoke to come out of the cooling water drain cock? Is there a test to determine possible damage?

Thank You for any help!
