Is adhesive required when replacing the engine cover gasket?

I replace them without adhesive but I know that some folks use it.

Ditto to Jimmy's comment. However, I once had an old Merc that the gasket would fall out every time I removed the cover - so I glued that one in.

I glue them in. A little Bellows adhesive on the seal and push it in place. Reason: The cowling seal sinks fast if it hits the water.
