Help please 1977 omc 175 wont crank over

I have a 1977 omc 175 with an electric shift. The engine won't crank anymore!! It seems like its stuck!! Could this have anything to do with oil leaking out of the upper unit??

Please help!! any ideas will be healpfull

yes - remove the drive. seized drive will lock the engine.
An upper low on oil will seize.
sounds like the diagnosis is almost complete.
 
I removed the sterndrive and the engine cranked over just fine......I will send in the upper unit to get rebuild and Ill be back in buisness

does the upper unit need type c oil too or just the lower unit. If not what kinda oil should should i put in the upper unit. I currently have premium gear lube in there.
 
anything with a boat on the bottle.

Merc super expensive stuff, or any Johnson dealer will have it, brp. will have it. Quicksilver in wally world - and auto stores have it.

Regular 'ole gear oil not type c.
