Engine rebuild or repower

I have twin 1986 4.3 V6 engines that are using some oil and getting tired. How much power will my Cobra drives handle.My engines are probably down around 150 or less. I will check to see what the cost difference is between rebuild and new. If I went with a new Vortec they are 225hp and should be smother running plus easer on fuel. Will the legs take the extra power.
 
Coupler shouldn't be a problem. Pretty sure they are all the same splines, Mercruiser vs. OMC. vs. Volvo Penta.
 
Thanks for the quick replies. I will check the coupler befor I decide to go new verses rebuild as part of my research on the pros and cons and cost differences.
