Purchased the first family boat.....with high hopes.
Got a good deal on the rig.....even if the engine is a loss.

Problem: engine starts hard, have to use choke alot.
Boggs--have to advance throttle slow and its got a vibration(miss maybe) but once it reaches about 3,000 seems to run good.
It seems to pick up pretty nice at 3,000, but under that the vibration returns, and it seems to have a miss.
I can feel the vibration in the hull too.

I'm afraid to have a compression test done on it.

The price of taking it to the shop may be more than its worth ?? I dont want to screw myself there either.
I'm pretty mechanically inclined so hopefully with some direction from someone out there I can fix this thing.

I would recommend the compression test. You could start by backing out the idle screw a1/4 turn.If the numbers check out a carb cleaning would be the order of the day. Do you advance the throttle when starting cold? It will definitely help

Yes you need to do a compression check. What is the background on the motor? Has it been sitting a while without being ran? How long?

If you can change a spark plug you can do a compression test. A gauge is not that expensive and YouTube has a multitude of videos on "How to" do it.
