87 merc 9.9 leaking fuel

my 87 merc started to leak a small amount of fuel when I tilt it to take it off. I heard this could be the start of carb troubles? any advice

Check all of the fuel lines for cracks. If all are still good and not cracked or dry rotted then rebuild the carb.
 
Nothing wrong with your carb. The problem is that you didn't run her dry before tilting her up. Pull the fuel hose while she's runnign and let her stall on her own before tilting her up.

I respect your expertise. Since I am new to outboards can you explain for my knowledge why the fuel would leak out on an 87 OB when tilted while newer models I have used don't leak? Thanks.
 
Newer ones have a different design to avoid that (thanks to environmental concerns). It's also possible that your fuel elvel is a bit too high.
