PLEASE HELP!! 1997 force 120 starter problems

I have a 1997 mercury force 120 and the starter is not working completly. It gets half a turn off and starts smoking and the battery cables are getting really hot. I cleaned all the connections but it did not help. Is the starter bad or is there other wiring issues I should be looking in to??? Any help would be appreciated. I am a new boat owner and could use all the help I can get> Thanks.
 
First start with all the connections.Then do a compression/spark test.Then rebuild or clean the starter.
That's an easy job.J
 
pull the starter off the motor and tear it apart and lightly sand the brushes down and also all metal that comes in contact with the brushes , ive had this problem with my force's and chryslers, its mostly just rust inside the starter, if not check that ground wire , my force was bad for that , go big or go home with the cables
