volvo MD1 stuck in fwd gear - enlightenment sought

I changed my engine mounts

- then it got stuck in fwd gear

common MD1 fault

something to do with ridges growing on the cones and sticking the splines

first solution is to turn prop while holding engine in place

tried that today - the prop shaft can be turned - but with effort

I can feel those cones being forced past those splines

no wonderful moment of release ensued though

then in the manual I read that poor alignment could result in severe damage to reverse

whole manual here

I can live with it stuck in forward - the engine is a good starter

the engine seems to be beautifully ligned up - but obviously in the run up to engine mount failure of May then it would have been running some-what out of balance

I have also changed to slightly less slippery oil as this was a reported source of occasional sticking - apparently although that makes very little sense to me

Unhook shaft flange from gear and make sure shaft is not holding it in gear. Take wooden block and hit it in an attempt to move gear flange back out of forward cone. Do this with engine cold. If bearings are worn ,shift lever can drive forward male cone to far into female gear. It will stick. Should disassemble and inspect.
