'78 OMC Stern Drive

Out on a reservoir in North Texas this morning putting along and the outdrive sounded like it shifted into neutral. Turned the boat off and restarted and no going forward or reverse, it just simply revved up like I was in neutral. Doesn't seem to be ingaging. Before this happened I smelled exhaust fumes. Any ideas? on how to fix?

is it overheating?
sounds like the waterpump shaft splines may have stripped in the drive - the w/p shaft transmits power from the upper gearcase to the lower
common for those splines to fail if the impeller isn't serviced every few seasons with a liberal supply of grease applied to the splines
 
To the best of my knowledge it was not overheating. It just seemed to go into neutral while I was throttling. I did notice a considerable loss of power right before.
