Screws for mounting a leaning post

Hi there, mounting a leaning post in my center console, any recommendations for the size screw I should be using? Was thinking a 1 1/4 X 3/8 should probably do it. Gas tank is under deck there but that size screw should leave me enough room.
 
A screw that is just long enough to go the thickness of deck.And That all depends if original decking or if somone else has modified decking!!
