85 galaxy conquest 3.0 l mercruiser charging problem ??

I have replaced my alternator tightned belt replaced inline fuse link attached to starter cylinoid.. I am still not getting a charge can it be a problem with the starter ?? it starts fine n runs however i am lost ne other ideas ?? can i jsut run the main charging wire to the starter without the fuse ?? I get charge that way but dont wanna blow ne thing up or harm my new alternator please help me ??? i get a charge without the fuse link but not with it the only thing i can think of is my starter cylinoid is bad ???should i just replace the starter or run it without the fuse block ??
