Water pump question

It's time to replace my water pump on my 90HP yamaha. There are places that sell the whole kit and some just the impeller. The question I have is when is it necessary to replace the whole kit? Is it OK to just replace the impeller? This is my first boat but I do know a little bit about motors. Thanks for any info.

In most cases a new impeller does the trick.-------------If you are running where there may be a lot of sand in the water , then you might want to consider a complete kit.
 
Thank you for the info. I removed the lower unit and see that everything else was OK. The impeller was dry rotted. Just order the impeller yesterday.
