OMC Cobra shift rod height

Hi there. My cobra drive will shift into reverse but not forward. With the drive in neutral I
measured the shift rod height from the housing surface to the top of the shift rod head and I get 7 inches.
The manual says it should be 7 13/64". Is it OK to back off the locknut underneath the shift rod head and turn the shift rod to get it to the correct height or do I have to separate the upper and lower drive housings so I can turn the shift rod and head together. Thanks
 
The only way to accurately get the shift rod height correct is to split it. You may as well do it, if u don't it will never shift right. Another wonderful design feature courtesy of OMC. Hey I'm going thru the same shift adjustment nightmare that you are. Good luck with it. OMC came up with a 20 step adjustment procedure. They deserve to be bankrupt, & that's why most techs won't touch 'em with a 10 ft. pole.
