newby boater PLEASE HELP!!!!!

we recently purchased a 1989 bayliner with a 5.o cobra 302 motor. when we bought it it needed a foot so we got that. took boat to water it was overheating. took heads off to c if they were cracked had them pressure tested they wer good machinists shaved them a little to smooth them, put new gaskets on and put back together. someone suggested we check water pump in foot. it was basically melted so we changed the water pump and took it back to the water the boat took off at first then it was like someone put it in neutral. it wouldn't go in forward or reverse anyone have any idea what might have happend? we didn't have this problem at first, it worked fine. As for the overheating we let it set and idle in the water for over an hour and it didn't overheat but we didn't get to really run it to see. if anyone has any advice it would b greatly appreciated!

Well, u may have the overheating problem solved. However, did u change the impeller & I hope u replaced everything in that pump. If not you'll have problems. And you'll know once u get it up on plane. As far as the boat not moving, could be shift cable. Did u check level of gear oil before u took it out? Any noise from lower unit? Did u smell rubber burning? If yes, engine coupler is shot. Bad news. Oh, change the prop. The one u have on there may have spun it's hub. Hope that's all it is.

as for the impeller not sure and he bought a new water pump im assuming everything was replaced. he did check gear oil and it was full there was no noise or smell. he did have the prop off before he took it back to water could it have not ligned up properly when he put it back on? also before he took it back to the water he had the foot submerged in a giant tub of water and put it in gear and it engaged. could that have damaged something? sorry im not real good at this. He said he was gonna try to check prop this evening after work. thanks for replying!

is the prop the kind with a rubber friction hub? if so, it could be slipping. The rubber gets old and rots. could try a spare prop.

the tub of water would not cause the "no propulsion" issue. It can damage the water pump impeller though if not submerged deep enough. (have a look at how deep the outdrive sits in the lake next time you are out)
