Purchased a used prop for a 1996 Mercury 175 L. The prop does not have the ability to accept the plastic cup 'sheer' and connects direct to the gears of the prop shaft. Should I use the prop or not? What problems could I have without a 'sheer' cup in place?
 
Sounds like you bought a standard prop for the motor, and that the one on the motor is a diffrent style. You can buy props in all configerations where you just replace the blades (Phrania or Solas) just to name a few. The prop will work as intended, you will need to remove the shear cup down to the splines. The new prop should have a ruber bushing that acts as a slip clutch when someting is hit by the prop.
