Suzuki 1984 DT 75 Impeler

I just mounted at new to me DT 75. I fired it up and noted it was not peeing but hot air coming out the out port. I changed the impeller and with the garden hose i flush water up the tube running down from the motor. While flushing noted water coming out the out ports. Re-assembled the lower unit. When i started it up i had a stream (maybe weaker then normal but i have no context). I finished another project and came back a few hrs later. When i fired it up it no longer peed. Noted their was no bushing between the tube and the impeller housing. all help appreciated,

update. engine flushes just fine. impeller might have been in backwards so i switched it around with no luck. connecting tube bushing was a bit hard so i added some plumbers tape and appears to have good seal. still no water out the top of the engine. i am out of ideas.. if i did have the impeller in backwards at first could i have completely ruined it by running the motor for 1 min? it did not look bad on inspection.

solver.. ear muffs did not force water up to water pump... worked fine in the water..
