Marine Starter

How can you tell if a GM starter is marine or from the local autoparts store? It was never a concern for my until this year I have finally finished my interior... Enclosed the engine compartment. so now I'm a little worried about fumes.

A Marine rated starter motor will have the SAEJ1171 certification and/or CE certification and/or ISO certification listing on it.

If replacing an OEM starter motor, consider one of the HTGR/PMGR motors in the Marine version.
They will usually kick butt over the OEM style.

Make sure that the reduction gears are all steel... and make sure that the package includes new bolts.
The nose housing can change on these, and often the OEM bolts are of an incorrect length.
If these were to bottom out (prior to clamping the motor), you will have issues.

As with any enclosed engine bay, be sure to operate the bilge blower motor in accordance with OEM recommendations prior to start up.
