How to remove gear cable

How do i remove a gear shift cable from a 5.0l cobra, do i tap it out and pull back through hose into the boat?
Also i was told that the engine is a 5.7l, but the outdrive is a 5.0l
Is a 5.0l outdrive compatible with a 5.7l engine, or have i got a 5.0l engine
I have just bought this boat and this set up is still new to me
Any guidance very welcome
 
Gear cable now removed,waiting for a new one to come from States

Should I now change the PDS bearings while the outdrive is off? if so is there anything I need to know, or is it straightforward?

same drive. me i would change all the rubber new bearing, see do you want to be pulling that drive again.

Oh you need a alignment bar you have to check alignment.
 
will do what you suggested, is there anywhere that i can download an original 1988 omc service manual, i have just bought one but it is a clymer and at first glance seems like a waste of money
