Replace thermostats as routine maintenance or only replace when bad?

Should the thermostats be left alone unless there is a problem or should they be replaced regularly like the water pump impeller? My gut feeling is to leave them alone, I'm running in saltwater and it's a 1993 DT150 that has no cooling problems and I'd probably just shear the housing bolts off.
