1984 70 hp runs rough

Had out yesterday 1st time this spring, fresh fuel, ran fine up to 3/4 throttle, after 15 min warmup went to full throttle- immediately died, restart was hard with a different noise while running, shut down- electric motor in to shore. tried today at landing on trailer, started easier but still sounded bad running rough, pulled plug wires 1 at a time- no real difference between the 3. also what should charging voltage be? I read 12.8 on meter @ battery @ idle.
 
I need help. My 1998 Yamaha 25hp fourstroke, was running fine then all of a sudden out on the lake when I cranked it up to full throttle it died. It turns over fine, I've got spark, gas but it dies just after starting. Gas is fresh. I've sprayed starting fluid in to the carb and it starts, then dies. I'm more of a novice with outboards so pls be patient with me. Can anyone tell me what steps I should take next to fix it? Sounds like the same problem to me??

Brought to mechanic yesterday
oil pump failure, top cylinder scored.
mechanic says bore all 3, new pistons and oil pump.
Big money, should I attempt myself? or look for a different motor
