My DT40c stopped running after being run hard towing a skier and could not be restarted. I checked for spark, gas, float valve working and could not get it to go. I took it to the mechanic (I am in the Turks and Caicos islands) and after spending $320 during which time the engine would not start, he announced that he had found the problem and that one set of reed valves, the stopper and the three screws were missing and one of them was bent. I checked online and it showed that there are four sets of reed valves. I don't see how the motor could ingest the valve, the stopper and screws and still turn over. Is the mechanic feeding me a line of $%^#. I purchased the motor in Venezuela in 2003 and it has never been taken apart. Any suggestions about what wiould cause this not to run and am I really missing a set of reed valves.

Is it possible for the timing to get out of synch by itself??
