how do i check the year of a powerhead

I have a 1997 Merc 150L but the powerhead has been replaced with a complete older model, carbs and all. Where is the number I need to locate to find out what year it is so I can buy parts?
 
Look for a round welsh plug on the motor. If it hasn't been replaced the serial number should be stamped in it. Post the serial number and we can look it up.
 
Thanks for the response. I saw the number stamped in an aluminum plug but I could never find anywhere to reference it. The boat is at my cabinet shop so I'll check it and post it tomorrow, again thanks for your time, much appreciated.
