Yamaha 150 shifting problems

i have a yamaha 150 on a bay boat and when I shift to forward and reverse there

is excessive grinding, a friend adjusted the linkage on the top of the motor but that did not seem to help any suggestions

Do you shift with a " quick firm motion " of the handle or do you think it is best to " ease it into gear " ??

Also, Check the shift rod. Just above the lower unit on the front side, you can see a small section of the shift rod. They get very thin and weak right in that spot from rust.

The link below is to a 1992 175 Yamaha that was dropped at my shop about one hour ago. The picture is of a weakened by rust shift rod. It grinds in drive and reverse.

I suggest that, check the magnetic bolt, is there any lager chips then normal. you have to change the shift rod.
