Need help with Yamaha dual station controls

Need help with adjusting my dual station controls. My system is the older model w/o actuaters. Purely mechanical 4 cables in (2 shift, 2 throttle) and 2 out ( 1 shift, 1 thottle) to motor. The dual station units are set close the motors, within 8' feet. Need advice on adjusting for smoother shifting. When I engage the throttles only they smoothly. The problem is in the shifting? Thanks
 
Justintime, Thanks for the help.... again. Would have never thought to look in that direction. Will give it a try. I'm trying to relax the cable @ the motor by loosening the set nuts, correct? Also, any info on those cable stays ( w/ teeth) inside the DS units that adjust? Thanks
 
the set nuts are just there to make sure it does not turn
you need a minimum of at least 10MM of threads
i think that is like 6 turns
 
relax the cables it would be helpful, but I suggest use suzuki cables. it`s smoother then yamaha cables and check the cable end lugs. I agree with
justintime.
