need help putting shift shaft cam into lower unit for mercury 1996 15hp

i have a 1996 15hp mercury outboard. the serial number is og328464. i changed the water pump and took the shift shaft out of the lower unit and reinstalled it but the cam broke. i have a feeling i did something wrong when putting it back in. i got a new one and need help with what direction and the right way to reinstall this would be. thanks

I believe the lower unit has to come apart to re-install that.

Well, the manual shows the prop shaft is installed AFTER the shift mechanism is installed.------------------Spring loaded plunger in the prop shaft comes all the way forward if there is no shift cam there.-----------------Bearing retainer on the back of the unit is left hand thread.----------------------Some models had a thrust washer in front of the prop that when turned around becomes the tool to remove the carrier ( using the prop to turn the tool ).----------Of course your results may vary.
