merc 1979 50 hp lower unit

does anyone know what the differences in a 1979 50hp lower unit and a 1980's lower unit is? . Do they just have a different gear ratio? I haven't counted the gears yet on the 1980's lower unit yet to see but looks like its all the same. the prop shaft is the same into the mid 1990's

think i answered it myself . The lower part of the drive shaft and the inside of the lower unit case is different. Maybe the gears are a different ratio . Guess i'll build a short shaft lower using a 40hp from about the same year and buying a short drive shaft for the 50hp lower . I always need a spare lol I'm always going were nobody else goes
 
The earlier ones were 1.64:1 and the later ones were 2:1. Some like the later ones (heavy boats), but I like the earlier ones since my boats are small and light.
