water pump 140

Changed the water pump (impeller) on my 140 4/stroke. It will not pick up water on it's own. With a water hose it does fine. Turn off the hose and it will stay primed and do just fine at all speeds. Cut the engine off and wait a bit. And it will not pick up prime by itself. HELP.... JT
 
Tell us more !--------you are running this where , in the driveway / boat in the water / in a bucket with a water level that is not high enuff.------------Picture??
 
I tried both. At the boat ramp and in a 35 gal drum. In both cases, the water level was fine. At the ramp it would not pick up prime at all. At the house, if I started it with the hose and the lower unit in the drum. Then turn the water hose off it would stay primed and run for ever. But let it sit, and it will not pick up prime at all...Thanks JT
