alarm goes off

I have a Tracker Pro 60 by Mercury Marine and as we were trolling, an alarm went off. Checked the oil...that was fine; the engine didn't seem hot, so what caused this alarm? Didn't even know there was one on here since we bought the boat and motor used and have no manual.

You may want to specify what the alarm sounds like (constant/broken, pitch, etc). I think there may be different sounds for different issues. What if anything has been done to the outboard since you bought it (maintenance, parts replacement, etc)?

The motor has been totally looked over and is in good shape. The alarm was a continuous high pitch alarm sort of like a smoke alarm going off. It has new oil, plugs, etc. Just wonder what caused this alarm to go off. Thanks.

It could be as simple as a defective module that is sending the wrong signal to the horn.-----------Or a defective horn itself.---------------------Did this alarm ever sound for a second or two when the key was turned on ( self test function ) for the horn ??

no...it wasn't the horn, for sure. It was definitely an alarm going off that didn't stop until we turned the engine off. Then we could start it again and run for awhile before it went off again. Shut engine off; waited a bit and turned back on; then ran the boat wide out and it didn't go off again on our way back to the docks.

A steady alarm is telling you its overheating. Play it safe and replace the impeller and thermostat. If you wait it may cause major engine damage.
