starter on my Perkins 4-108

I just had my 50 HP Perkins rebuilt, it is an excellent job. During the process of removing the engine and trying to get everything cleaned-up, even the electrical, I have a problem hooking up my starter. This is not a Perkins issue it is mainly a starter hook-up question(s).
The starter is a*rebuilt "Lucas"*with a new selonid. There are 3 terminals on the starter; the large terminal for power from battery and 2 small terminals on the selonid. The situation I have is; there are 3 wires from the ignition with only 2 terminals.
Any clear instructions for this hook-up?
Any risk of damage if they are hooked up incorrectly?
I tried to hook them up with 2 wires on 1 terminal and 2 on the other but no response.*I tried crossing the wires with a screw driver and nothing.
How do I test the ignition switch?
Let's assume we are dealing with a charged battery.
Although the selonid is new, could I have damaged it by crossing wires incorrectly?
I would appreciate any words of advice.
Jeff
