Hi all,
Newbie to the forum,also to boating.I am trying to help a friend first identify the year of the engine and any certain characteristics about it.I know that it is a Mariner 40 HP,and she thinks that it is a long shaft,also I know that it is a 4 cycle,Serial#503276,Code#6E9L,Model40 ELTO.I really appreciate any help that anyone could provide on this,thanks Jay.

4 cylinder or 4 cycle??

It's a 2 cylinder and 4 cycle engine,no oil gas mix,straight gas.

Is it really a 4 stroke or does it have automatic oil injection.-------Check and make sure , then check again.

It was produced in 1987. In 1988 it was changed a little again and called the 40ELT.

However, about 95% of parts from other "C" models produced during the 80's/early 90's are interchangable with your particular model.."

Looks like a 2 cylinder 2 stroke to me !!!!.
