won't go forward a 4hp mercury

hello, I own a 4hp mercury and my problem just occured when i was out on the water it will go into neutral and reverse but when i try to put it in forward it makes and awful clanging and banging like it is trying to find the gear if there are gears

Give more information.---------------Oil changed regularly/ water in gearcase maybe-----------------Recent impeller change??--------------------Top spline on driveshaft greased on a regular basis?
